Neymar has jumped the Nike bubble and hoped on the Puma ride! Undoubtedly a huge addition to the Puma family as The Brazilian football star has made waves in the sneaker community through his collaborations and his teams (PSG) affiliation with Jordan brand. Via Instagram he announced his deal by paying homage to the iconic Puma King silhouette by stating “I want the KING to reign on the pitch again and inspire generations, as it has inspired mine. This will be my PUMA history”. Exciting to see what comes of this endorsement as puma strengthens their team the already includes the likes of Rihanna, Jay-Z, Usain Bolt, J.cole, and more.
Although the loss of megastar such as Neymar may prove costly for Nike, their roster of athletes still hold weight amongst its competitors. We take a look at a few of the recent collaboration between athletes and Nike’s vault of classic silhouettes.
Odell Beckham Jr x Air Max 720 “Young King Of Drip”
The ever charismatic, headline-grabbing NFL superstar received his own collaboration with Nike on the recent Air Max 70 silhouette. The pair caught the attention of the community s OBJ’s rendition used a variety of mesh, suede, and nubuck overlays in a flash of vibrant/neon hues. We expected nothing less from the star as his on and off-field persona makes him a constant center of attention. In an interview with Complex, OBJ mentions drawing inspiration from “Summertime, pool part, festival vibes”, insisting that he wanted it to be a Loud shoe”. Undoubtedly, he achieved this and had moved onto several colourways of the shoes.
Serena x off-white
The most decorated tennis player and generational inspiration, Serena Williams has dominated tennis circuits for years with her skill, power, and tenacity. Now with the support of Virgil Abloh, she has taken over the streets. Designed by Abloh, the capsule dubbed “Queen collection” brings the forces of fashions and tennis together as the two continue to push boundaries and inspire youth in the relevant fields. The first release from the collection, Off-White Blazer Mid, is now a sought-after pair in ant collection and can fetch up to £800+ on the resale market.
Ronaldo x AM97 “Golden Patchwork”
The best ever footballer? I will let you decide! But the Portuguese ace is definitely in the conversation and is still producing at the tender age of 35. The pair are inspired by Ronaldo’s upbringing as he recalls having 2 shoes growing up, 1 for school, and 1 for football. However, when one pair became scuffed, his mother would have to patch them up similar to the design seen on his pair.
Colin x AF1
Nike has always supported their athletes on and off the field and this release was no different. After NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick made a stance against racial equality in America by taking a knee during the national anthem, he as met with national backlash and dropped out of the league. Nike backed Colin’s fight through a series of commercials and the release of his own Nike Af1. The pair feature unique qualities including embodied pictures of Colin on the heel alongside the number “081416”, the date in which he first took the kneel during the pre-game national anthem.
